Some thoughts about studio today and how to proceed with the Research Assignment.
1. Complete the story board part of the research assignment last. You need to complete the research, interview, etc... to do the story board well.
2. When you work on the Story Board part of the assignment think of including the following key frame/key boards to include in your story.
- Meeting the teacher
- Storing and sharing personal belongings
- A board for each traditional subject (math, language, history, ect...) that weaves together the big class topic, the students holistic intelligence (MI), Finnish culture and the physical environment.
3. Use vivid descriptions of the environment in your story board.
EXAMPLE
Maija was excited about the math project today! Yesterday she was in the forrest where she could measured the size of trees with a tape measure and collected leaves. She loved running around the trees, small and big trees... this helped her remember the different types.... it made her feel as if she was dancing with the leaves. She called over John who liked to get away and be by himself, but always seemed to have good ideas. They pushed together two sliding tables and locked them in place. They then went and collected a variety of clear plastic containers from the large shelving unit to sort their leaves. Maija loved how the teacher changed the shelving unit into many different shapes. They placed the leaves into different piles based on size and if they could fit into the different size boxes. They then used their measurements of the trees to see if the leaf size related to how big around the tree was. This was one way to sort, but they were asked to find differnt ways to sort the leaves.
Earlier in the day John was by himself in the private cubby thinking of the different woods used to build with. He loved being in the cubby, it was just his size and it allowed him time to think. He liked the he could control the light and sound in the cubby and watch the other students. The cubby reminded him of the blanket forts he loved to make with his father. They had just completed a wood project where they learned how to use a hammer. The three different type of wood used in the project were still hanging on the wall for all the students to see. John and Maija then asked if they could match the wood with the leaves....
