Japan Mini Term 2011  -- Japanese Architecture, Landscape, and Interiors

Re-framing design and culture

This course exposes students to a total combined impact of landscape design, architecture, and interior design thought direct emersion in Japanese culture. The program seeks to remove the western framework of understating Japanese aesthetics by providing a combination of direct cultural experiences, the practice of reflective thinking, and a personal narrative. The method of the personal narrative will be through photography and drawing.

May 12_ Arrival in Osaka, Japan

After traveling for two days, we finally arrived in Osaka, Japan! We're a couple members short, but hopefully they arrive soon (good luck Piper and Bernice!). Riding the train to the hotel, we noticed how sterile and clean the city is. It seems like everyone has the same small, compact, white toy car. We also noticed the clear differentiation between recreational spaces and working spaces. After checking into the hotel we went to the mall to find a tenague which is a Japanese napkin used at dinner and other occasions in Japan (our interpretation was a hybrid towel and handkerchief… towelkerchief!) A few of us settled for towelkerchiefs with embroidered penguins in tuxedos.

During our scavenger hunt, we came across a wondrous land of lights and enchantment aka the arcade. We were surprised to find people of all ages at the arcade, specifically the elder patrons. There were only three types of games there coin push, claw and slot machines (we still have tokens). After a long day of traveling and exploring the mall it was finally time for FOOOOOOD!

At the press of a button (literally), our waitress came to our table, served us tea and took our orders.  The tea had an interesting flavor (noodles perhaps?) and the food was delicious! Unfortunately, dessert was not meant to be, the soft serve ice cream shop was closed by the time we finished dinner (ahhh…green tea ice cream, I'll getcha another day). Well that's all for now, we ought to get some sleep (if some of us can get back into our rooms). If that fails, there's always a public bath conveniently located on the 2nd floor of our hotel.
